The difference between computer room and ordinary comfort air conditioning

The computer room has strict requirements for temperature, humidity, and cleanliness. Therefore, the design of dedicated air conditioning for computer rooms differs greatly from traditional comfort air conditioning in the following six aspects:

1. Traditional comfort air conditioning is mainly designed for personnel, with low air supply volume, large air enthalpy difference, and simultaneous cooling and dehumidification; The sensible heat in the computer room accounts for more than 90% of the total heat, including the heat generated by the equipment itself, the heat generated by lighting, the thermal conductivity through walls, ceilings, windows, and floors, as well as the heat radiated by sunlight, the heat generated by infiltration through gaps, and the heat generated by fresh air. The amount of moisture generated by these heat sources is very small, so using comfort air conditioning will inevitably result in low relative humidity in the computer room, causing static electricity to accumulate on the surface of the internal circuit components of the equipment, resulting in discharge and damaging the equipment, interfering with data transmission and storage. Meanwhile, due to the fact that 40% to 60% of the cooling capacity is consumed in dehumidification, the actual cooling capacity of the cooling equipment is significantly reduced, greatly increasing energy consumption.

The dedicated air conditioning for the computer room adopts strict control of the evaporation pressure inside the evaporator in the design, increases the air supply volume to make the surface temperature of the evaporator higher than the dew point temperature of the air without dehumidification, and all the generated cold is used for cooling, improving work efficiency and reducing moisture loss (large air supply volume reduces the enthalpy difference of air supply).

2. Comfortable air conditioning has low air volume and wind speed, and can only circulate local airflow in the supply direction. It cannot form an overall airflow circulation in the computer room. The uneven cooling of the computer room leads to regional temperature differences, with low temperature in the supply direction area and high temperature in other areas. The heating equipment accumulates local heat due to different placement positions, resulting in equipment overheating and damage.

The dedicated air conditioning in the computer room has a large air supply volume and a high air exchange rate (usually between 30 to 60 times per hour). The entire computer room can form an overall airflow circulation, allowing all equipment in the room to be cooled evenly.

3. Traditional comfort air conditioners, due to their low air supply and low air exchange rates, cannot guarantee sufficient airflow in the computer room to bring dust back to the filter, resulting in sedimentation inside the equipment and adverse effects on the equipment itself. And the filtering performance of general comfort air conditioning units is poor, which cannot meet the purification requirements of computers.

The use of dedicated air conditioning in the computer room provides a large air supply and good air circulation. At the same time, due to the special air filter, it can filter out dust in the air in a timely and efficient manner, maintaining the cleanliness of the computer room.

4. As most electronic devices in the computer room operate continuously and have long working hours, it is required that the dedicated air conditioning in the computer room be designed to operate continuously under high loads throughout the year and maintain extremely high reliability. Comfort air conditioning is difficult to meet the requirements, especially in winter, when computer rooms have good sealing and many heating devices, and the air conditioning unit still needs to work normally for cooling. At this time, general comfort air conditioning is difficult to work normally due to low outdoor condensation pressure. The dedicated air conditioning in the computer room can still ensure the normal operation of the cooling cycle through a controllable outdoor condenser.

5. Specialized air conditioners for computer rooms are generally equipped with dedicated humidification systems, high-efficiency dehumidification systems, and electric heating compensation systems. Through microprocessors, the temperature and humidity in the computer room can be accurately controlled based on the data feedback from various sensors. However, comfort air conditioners generally do not have humidification systems and can only control temperature with low accuracy, making it difficult to control humidity and unable to meet the needs of computer room equipment.

6. Precision air conditioning units are widely used in high-precision environments such as computer rooms, program-controlled switch rooms, satellite mobile communication stations, large medical equipment rooms, laboratories, testing rooms, and precision electronic instrument production workshops. Such environments have high requirements for various indicators such as air temperature, humidity, cleanliness, and airflow distribution, and must be guaranteed by dedicated precision air conditioning equipment that operates safely and reliably 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In summary, there are significant differences in product design between computer room specific air conditioning and comfort air conditioning, as they are designed for different purposes and cannot be interchanged. Special air conditioning for computer rooms must be used. At present, many industries in China, such as finance, postal and telecommunications, television stations, oil exploration, printing, scientific research, and electricity, have widely adopted it to improve the reliability and economic operation of computers, networks, and communication systems in computer rooms.
