Differences and Similarities between Computer Room Air Conditioning and Home Air Conditioning

1、 Uninterrupted operation, year-round cooling

The heat dissipation of equipment in the computer room belongs to a steady-state heat source, which operates continuously throughout the year. This requires an uninterrupted air conditioning guarantee system, and there are also high requirements for the power supply of air conditioning equipment. Not only does it require dual mains power supply, but also a generator set as a backup power source for the air conditioning system that guarantees important computer equipment. Long term steady-state heat sources result in the need for cooling even in winter in computer rooms, especially in southern regions, which is more prominent. In northern regions, if refrigeration is still required in winter, when choosing an air conditioning unit, it is necessary to consider the condensing pressure and other related issues of the unit. In addition, the proportion of outdoor cold air intake can be increased to achieve energy-saving goals.

2、 Large air volume and small enthalpy difference

The heat of the equipment is transferred to the computer room through conduction and radiation. The heat generated in densely populated areas of the equipment is concentrated. In order to achieve uniform temperature and humidity in various areas of the computer room, and to control it within the allowable base and fluctuation range, a large air volume is required to take away the remaining heat. In addition, there is less latent heat in the computer room, so dehumidification is generally not required. When the air passes through the evaporator of the air conditioner, it does not need to drop below zero temperature. Therefore, the temperature difference and enthalpy difference of the air supply are required to be small. In order to remove the residual heat in the computer room, a larger air supply volume is needed.

3、 High sensible heat

The computer equipment such as hosts and peripherals, servers, switches, optical transceivers, and power support devices installed in the computer room, such as UPS power supplies, will dissipate heat into the computer room through heat transfer, convection, and radiation. This heat only causes an increase in the temperature inside the computer room and belongs to sensible heat. The heat dissipation of a server cabinet ranges from several kilowatts to tens of kilowatts per hour. If blade servers are installed, the heat dissipation will be higher. The heat dissipation of equipment in large and medium-sized computer rooms is around 400W/m2, while data centers with high installation density may exceed 600W/m2. The sensible heat ratio in the computer room can reach up to 95%.

4、 Low latent heat

Not changing the temperature inside the computer room, but only changing the humidity of the air inside the computer room, this part of heat is called latent heat. There are no dehumidification devices in the computer room, and the latent heat mainly comes from the staff and outdoor air. However, large and medium-sized computer rooms generally adopt a human-machine separation management mode, and the enclosure structure of the computer room is well sealed. The fresh air is usually pre treated with temperature and humidity before entering the computer room, so the latent heat in the computer room is relatively small.
